Steps in setting up a NILS®.

To run a NIL scheme you need:

• A community organisation to auspice the project;
• Management Committee
• Capital (initially $10,000 but in larger areas growth to $50,000 after a few years is ideal);
• Small capital top-ups every few years
• Part-time administrative support (1 – 2 days per week) and some volunteers.

It is useful, though not essential to have:

• A financial counselling service to provide budgeting advice to clients;
• Discounts on the retail price of appliances and free delivery.

Training and administrative resources (model policies, procedures, computer software, etc) are available to help groups get started.

Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services hold the rights to the NILS® trademark. Organisations wishing to use this name, and receive the benefits associated with this need to be accredited through Good Shepherd. Once accredited organisations will have access to the NAB Funding for Capital Base funding.

Computer software is available from Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services, or an accounting package like MYOB would be appropriate.
